The Best White Christmas Margarita

This White Christmas Margarita Recipe will have you “rockin around the Christmas tree” for sure! Not only does it look like Christmas in a cup, but it is incredibly smooth. (Buyer beware!)With refreshing coconut-lime flavor and festive ruby-red cranberries, this co*cktail is as gorgeous as it is compulsively sip-able.

Why You’ll Love This White Christmas Margarita

Who doesn’t love a good margarita? And who doesn’t love a festive sip during the holidays? This co*cktail combines the best of both worlds! Here are a few other reasons why this white Christmas margarita will be your new favorite!

  • Pitcher Recipe: When it comes to holiday co*cktails, nobody wants to be stuck behind the bar instead of mingling. This recipe is made in a pitcher so you just have to make it once and enjoy the night.
  • Prep-friendly: What I love about this recipe is, it can be made ahead of time. I recommend taking it out 10 to 15 minutes before serving and give it a good stir with a whisk to break out the coconut milk that may have solidified in the refrigerator.
  • Creamy: The coconut milk in this margarita makes it extra creamy and luscious.
  • Strong Margarita Flavor: This margarita might look cute, but don’t be deceived. It’s super smooth but packs a tequila punch! Be warned! (sure to make you merry!)
  • Festive: The color speaks for itself! The bright white margarita plays well with the green rosemary and red cranberries for a pop of Christmas color!

What You’ll Need

Here’s a quick overview of what you’ll need to make this Christmas co*cktail recipe. Be sure to scroll down to the recipe card for specific amounts.

  • Coconut Milk: You’ll want to get the full-fat coconut milk in a can. It is extra creamy and the real deal!
  • Coconut Water: This is a “lighter” way to add more coconut flavor and not as many calories
  • Tequila: Um, this is a must in Margaritas. I’d recommend the silver tequila because it is lighter in color and won’t turn your margarita a golden color.
  • Grand Marnier: This orange flavored liquor is what gives this margarita a flavorful edge above the rest.
  • Lime Juice: The fresh lime juice cuts through the creaminess of the coconut milk and water and gives you that true margarita flavor!
  • Agave: I use agave in my margarita recipes instead of making a simple syrup. I find it’s lighter and not as sweet.
  • Cranberries & Rosemary Sprigs: This is more for the festive colors, not as much for the taste!

Do You Use Gold or Silver Tequila for Margaritas?

I like to use silver or blanco tequila. It has a smooth taste and is a younger tequila, so it’s only been aged in the oak barrel for 2 years at most. Gold tequila is aged for much longer and has a stronger taste. Not always ideal for margaritas.

What is the Best Tequila for Margaritas?

Using a good tequila can make all the difference when it comes to making your Christmas co*cktails shine! Here are the kinds of tequila that I think are best for making some really stellar margaritas:

  1. Patron Silver – It’s a great place to start when drinking tequila. It is made with agave without being too overwhelming. It’s smooth and definitely a good co*cktail mixer.
  2. Hornitos – This is a newer tequila to me. A friend of mine turned me on to it and I really like it. I tend to go with the resposado or the anejo for less agave forward taste.
  3. Don Julio – Hands down, this one is my husbands favorite! It is smooth and won’t leave you with a headache because it’s made well.

Can I Make This in Advance?

Homemade margaritas should last between 2 to 3 weeks in the refrigerator if kept in an air tight container. For this White Christmas Margarita Recipe you will just need to use a whisk to mix the coconut milk back up again as it tends to separate when it sits.

I have legit made this recipe probably 5 times in the past 2 months. Granted I was testing it out the first two times, but still. It is amazing! It’s creamy, smooth, a slight tropical flavor and has a nice zing from the lime juice. Plus it looks like the holidays from the cranberries and rosemary.

How to make a margarita Wiki? ›

The traditional recipe is 3:2:1 – three parts Tequila, two parts Triple Sec and one part lime juice; however, the IBA standard is 7:4:3 = (50% tequila, 29% Triple Sec, 21% fresh lime or lemon juice), which keeps 50% tequila, but uses slightly less Triple Sec and correspondingly slightly more lime juice.

How does Jennifer Aniston make her margaritas? ›

In a recent interview with InStyle, the First Ladies star revealed that her secret to making margaritas is sticking to the basics. She said, “It's basically silver tequila with lime juice shaken and over rocks. And some people like a little Cointreau, some don't.”

What makes restaurant margaritas so good? ›

Just as important as the style of tequila is the use of a high-quality orange liqueur. Part of the Daisy category of co*cktails, the Margarita calls for triple sec such as Cointreau for sweetness and balance. Though some may opt for agave nectar instead, the addition of the liqueur is what makes a true Margarita.

What is the best substitute for triple sec in a margarita? ›

If you don't have triple sec handy, you can substitute with another good-quality orange liqueur like Grand Marnier or Cointreau. For a non-alcoholic substitute you can add fresh orange juice, or agave nectar/simple syrup, to add a touch of sweetness.

While Cointreau is a premium option with a higher price point and ABV, triple sec is a more affordable and sweeter alternative. Regardless of your preference, Red & White offers both options for purchase, making it a convenient one-stop-shop for all your liquor needs.

Can I use orange juice instead of triple sec for margaritas? ›

A non-alcoholic substitute for triple sec is orange juice or orange extract mixed with simple syrup or sugar. Another option is to use an orange-flavored syrup or orange bitters, which can provide a similar flavor profile to triple sec without the alcohol.

What is the formula for a margarita? ›

In the end, a good Margarita is a question of proportions. It is a simple formula: 2 – 1 – ½ . 2 parts tequila, 1 part lime juice, ½ part cointreau. I like to measure in ounces, because the correct proportions, measured as 2 ounces, 1 ounce, ½ ounces make the perfect sized drink for the glasses I like to use.

Why is it called a Tommy's margarita? ›

The name “Tommy's Margarita” itself comes from a San Francisco restaurant of the same name where the iconic tequila co*cktail was revamped in the 90's - not by someone called Tommy - but a savvy bartender named Julio Bermejo.

What is the difference between a margarita and a Tommy's margarita? ›

So while a classic Margarita makes a divine drink by blending tequila, triple sec and lime juice, the Tommy's Margarita mixes tequila, agave syrup and lime juice. The sweetness of the agave syrup emphasises the flavour of the tequila rather than the strong citrus flavours.

Why do you need triple sec for margaritas? ›

In Margaritas, the inclusion of triple sec provides a luscious, warm citric note that counterbalances the lime juice's high acidity. Considering the relatively low ABV of most triple secs and orange liqueurs, the orange flavoring isn't as “juice-forward,” which allows the tequila to shine.

What is the best tequila for margaritas? ›

Across the board, though, we just wanted to find the best tequila for margaritas that substantiates whatever price tag it wears. Our best overall pick is Tequila Ocho Plata . It imparts a peppery, herbal flavor to the classic drink while also retaining a surprising brightness—plus it's affordable.

Do you use Cointreau and triple sec for margaritas? ›
