I love using Worcestershire sauce on burgers and as an ingredient in marinades. There are so many uses for it that I decided to make a low-carb version. It turned out tasting just as good as the store-bought version!

This is a classic sauce that people have loved using for decades. I thought it was about time I created a low-carb version too.

Why Most Worcestershire Sauces Are Not Low Carb

Store-bought bottles contain molasses and/or high fructose corn syrup. Both of these are definite no-gos on a low-carb diet.

For example, the popular Lea & Perrins Worcestershire sauce has 1 gram of sugar and 1 gram of carbs in each teaspoon - which adds up pretty quickly.

My recipe has zero net carbs in each serving! Huge difference.

Plus, when you are trying to eat low-carb, you always want to avoid anything with high fructose corn syrup in it. It negatively affects your blood sugar and can actually impact how your body digests carbs.

Frequently Asked Questions About Worcestershire Sauce

Before I share this amazing recipe with you all, here are a few questions I wanted to answer beforehand.

Why Make a Keto Worcestershire Sauce?

This is a very popular sauce that appears in lots of common recipes. Just like the name implies, it was first made by a company from Worcestershire, England.

That combination of spices can't be beaten! So, I just knew I had to create a version that fits in a low-carb lifestyle.

Did you know there are ground-up anchovies in most store-bought versions?

I decided not to add anchovies to mine. If you want to create a more authentic sauce, you can try to puree a few canned anchovies and see what you think!

Which Is the Best Low-Carb Sweetener to Use in Homemade Sauces?

I typically prefer something that dissolves well and doesn't have a strange aftertaste.

My personal favorite sweetener for sauces is Swerve brown sugar substitute. Real brown sugar is made by adding molasses to white sugar. So, a brown sugar substitute will also be the perfect substitute for molasses in your cooking.

If you don't have Swerve brown sugar substitute, there are lots of other low carb sweetenersyou can use instead. Just remember that not all of them can be used in a 1:1 ratio.

Can Vegans Eat Worcestershire Sauce?

Normally, vegans cannot eat it because one of the ingredients is anchovies.

However, that is not the case with this homemade sauce.

If you are vegan or vegetarian, you can use this sauce without worry. It's made with just vinegar, sweetener, and spices. No animal products are used anywhere!

Worcestershire Sauce Ingredients

This recipe uses ingredients you probably already have at home. If you have a well-stocked spice rack, then you should be set.

Quick Tips:

  • Use ground mustard and not the jarred yellow mustard that you refrigerate. The ground mustard has a bolder taste. Plus, the liquid mustard topping will change the texture of the sauce.
  • Try to use fresh garlic cloves instead of garlic powder. There is nothing like the flavor from fresh garlic. If you don't have fresh garlic, you can still use the powder. Just use ⅛ teaspoon powder for each clove.
  • I recommend using apple cider vinegar as the base of the sauce. This gives it an almost-sweet flavor without any sugar. The closest substitute for it is either white wine vinegar or lemon juice. You can also use white distilled vinegar with a splash of lemon juice to get the same taste.

Where to Buy Gluten-Free Soy Sauce

I used gluten-free soy sauce in order to keep it allergen-free. Typical brands of soy sauce will use wheat to give it a sweet flavor and build that aroma it is known for.

Thankfully, there are gluten-free options out there. My favorite alternative to soy sauce is liquid aminos. This is made from soybeans and has a bolder flavor.

Most grocery stores carry gluten-free sauces. Even Kikkoman sells a gluten-free soy sauce!

One piece of advice: Be careful as you read the labels to make sure you have the correct one.

How to Use Keto Worcestershire Sauce

There are endless ways you can use this sauce. You might even want to make a double batch and store it in a sealed mason jar in your refrigerator, because you will definitely use it.

  • Splash some on your hamburger as it cooks. This gives it a pop of flavor.
  • Marinate pork chops in this sauce for juicy chops every time.
  • You can also add a few drops of this sauce to a homemade Bloody Mary or other spicy drink (like a tomato-based V8 copycat).
  • I also love adding it to hearty stews and chilis. The flavors in this sauce give everything a well-rounded flavor.

I used it in these recipes:

  • Keto BBQ Sauce
  • Sausage Egg Roll In A Bowl
  • Keto Meatloaf Recipe

How to Store Homemade Worcestershire Sauce

You should always store used sauces in the refrigerator. I personally store my homemade sauces in a mason jar sealed tightly with a lid.

You can use whatever container you wish, as long as it has a lid that can be sealed completely and won't leak.

This sauce will last about one month if you store it properly in the refrigerator.

I also recommend labeling the jar with the date. This way, you know whether it is too old or not. You can tell if the Worcestershire sauce is bad if it has an odd smell or starts to change its texture.

Notes

Store unused Worcestershire sauce in an airtight container in the fridge. It will keep fresh for at least a month if stored properly. Adding a label to the container with the best buy date is helpful.

Liquid aminos or coconut aminos can be used in place of soy sauce if desired.
