FAQs

How can I find out if my vase is worth anything? ›

If you're still unsure, consult an expert or an antique appraiser who can help you identify the mark and provide more information about the vase's history and value. Learning to identify antique and vintage vases is a skill developed over time.

How do I know if my Chinese vase is worth anything? ›

Things You Should Know

Examine the shape, color, glaze, and reign mark on the vase. If they all date to the same dynasty or era, the vase is likely authentic. Look for signs of genuine aging like tiny rust spots, glaze contractions, or yellowing crackles. The glaze and paint should be intact.

How to get a Chinese vase appraised? ›

Preferably, you should try to find a specialist in your area. That way, you can bring the antique to him so he can look at it and examine it in person. Of course, if there isn't a Chinese antique specialist in your area, you might have to opt for one who does appraisal work online.

Are vases made in China worth anything? ›

It also takes a lot of work to make. The sculpting needs to be perfect, and the high kiln temperature requires a lot of trial and error. Sellers retailing real china vases for under $500 are selling them at loss. Even the least expensive pieces will cost almost $1000, and that's a lowball price.

How do you know if a glass vase is valuable? ›

Markings on glassware can help affect their value! Typically, glassware with pontil marks is considered more valuable because they are older and handmade. Scarcity is another factor that will affect the value of your antique glass. Bottles that are rare are going to yield a higher profit due to their low availability.

How to identify vintage vases? ›

Vintage vases often have a mark placed over the original maker's mark or at the bottom of the vase, indicating the period or the artist. For authenticity, also look for signatures or specific symbols that align with known manufacturers or periods.

How to get a vase value? ›

I would do an image search of it first, to see if it is common or not. Then I would try to figure out the material and search for that, such as under Vase bronze figures coiling snakes. Next, I would search for a reputable antiques dealer/appraiser and read all the reviews.

What does a Ming vase look like? ›

The following aspects can help you to identify Ming porcelain: Knife marks on the foot rim. Thick glaze with a slightly blue tone and bubbles, very smooth to touch. Red oxidisation in unglazed areas due to the iron-rich kaolin used in the Ming era.

How can I tell if my china is valuable? ›

In general, the value of fine china depends on the brand, condition, location, and age. This may go without saying, but an older, antique piece of china will command a higher price than newer pieces. The location or origin can also help determine its value.

How to sell a Chinese vase? ›

Auction houses are a popular place to try and sell niche items, including Chinese antique pottery. Sellers will often find the prices are the highest at these auctions; however, considering the large commissions charged, the prices may be similar to other methods.

Is my vase worth money? ›

Antique vase values for colored glass depend on a number of factors, including the vase's age, size, condition, rarity, beauty, and little details. A vase in beautiful condition with delicate handmade touches will sell in the $25 range, although larger or more elaborate hand-painted vases can be worth more.

How do I know if my ceramic vase is valuable? ›

Experts agree that there are five areas to consider when valuing your antique ceramic piece, which are collectively referred to by the acronym RADAR; Rarity, Aesthetics, Desirability, Authenticity and Really good condition.

What are the marks on the bottom of Chinese vases? ›

A reign mark records the name of the Chinese dynasty and the reign of the emperor during which the piece was made. It comprises four or six Chinese characters, and is usually found on the base of a work of art commissioned for the Emperor or his imperial household.

Is there an app to identify antique pottery? ›

What is ArchAIDE? Every day, archaeologists from around the world have to recognise and classify thousands of ceramic fragments. With ArchAIDE, a tablet or a smartphone can be used to take a photo of a ceramic fragment, and to enter basic textual information.

How do I know if my pottery is valuable? ›

Factory marks, artist signatures, and impressed logos are all different forms of pottery marks that can tell you the name of the company, the person who made the piece, and the date it was made. This information can help you identify how valuable your piece is to ceramic collectors.

How to tell the age of a glass vase? ›

A simple way is to compare any glass you think is antique with a more modern glass item. Antique glass is usually heavier. Other indicators to look out for are: The patina: older glass tends to show signs of use and passing time - so see if there are any small flakes, scratches and chips, or missing gilt.

How do I know if my antique is valuable? ›
